Many people have heard the name Tila Tequila in the past few years, be it from a men’s magazine like Stuff, Maxime or Penthouse, be it from the Playboy’s official website where she was elected first as the Cyber Girl of the week, and then the Asian Cyber Girl of the month back in 2002, be it as the host of the “Fuse TV” show, and lately, according to the page views on MySpace, as the most popular artist there, after she began her singer-songwriter carrier.

Tila Tequila is actually the stage name of the singer, model and television personality Tila Nguyen, which was a nickname she got in her early teens by experimenting with alcohol. The Singapore-born star is the third, and the youngest child of a Vietnamese family which emigrated from Vietnam after the war and then to the US when Tila was at the age of one. Having a harsh childhood she became a tomboy in middle-school and eventually a trouble-kid in high-school, including gangs, nightclubs and even drugs.

Upon finishing high-school she began writing poems, thus realizing that she wants to get involved in the entertainment industry, and not long after, she had a few attempts as a leading vocal in a few rock bands which failed in the end. Despite trying to realize herself as a singer, her career begun when she was approached by a Playboy scout in a mall and she accepted to model for the magazine. Afterwards she appeared on the cover of many other magazines, mostly being men’s magazines and import racing scenes, as well as in TV shows and even reality shows.
Being a model, Tila didn’t forget about her passion for songwriting and singing, and so, overwhelmed by the desire to be independent, she released her first single by herself on February 27th 2007 through iTunes. Due to her willpower and activity she managed till nowadays to put together two EP’s (“Sex” (2007) and “Welcome to the Dark Side” (2010)), a few more singles and even a video clip.

Her active life didn’t allow Tila much time for a personal one, nevertheless the few official relationships she had turned out bad or ended in tragedy. It is known that in 2009 she sued her former boyfriend Shawne Merriman, whom she accused of abuse. After that break and her declaration of being bisexual, Nguyen made public in December 2009 that she was engaged to heiress Casey Johnson, which shortly afterwards died from diabetes. At the moment the hip-hop star is trying to gain legal custody of Ava, the adoptive daughter of her late spouse as well as considering the adoption of a child from Haiti.
